Director of Development

The New York Youth Symphony (NYYS) is one of the most awarded youth programs in the nation, recognized for its innovative, educational programs for talented young musicians. Founded in 1963 as an orchestra to showcase the metropolitan area’s most gifted musicians ages 12-22, its activities have since grown to encompass programs in chamber music, conducting, composition, and jazz, with performances at world class venues including Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Through its commissioning program, First Music, the NYYS has commissioned over 150 works from young composers since 1984.

With a new strategic plan in place, the NYYS is now hiring a Director of Development to join its full-time staff. Reporting to the Executive Director, the successful candidate will have a passion for music education, a self-initiating, professional temperament, and 5-10 years of experience in development.

• In coordination with the Executive Director, manage all aspects of fundraising and resource development, including developing and implementing the organization’s overall fundraising strategy and annual development plan.
• Actively seek, cultivate, and solicit new funding sources from individuals, donors, foundation, corporate, and public sources, with a focus on arts education, community outreach, and other relevant or broader objectives.
• Prepare compelling materials to communicate with current and future donors, including grant writing and reporting to corporate, foundation and public funders, and individual donors.
• Orchestrate the annual campaign appeal and all fundraising-related events, and explore new fundraising projects and engagement opportunities.
• Oversee and maintain the processes and systems to support development efforts, including research, cultivation, stewardship, record keeping, reporting, and acknowledgements.
• Engage and liaise with the Trustee's Development Committee

• 5 or more years within non-profit fundraising world or related positions
• Excellent written and oral communications skills
• Experience with CRM databases, Salesforce preferred
• Bachelor’s degree
• Preferred qualities: A positive attitude, creative thinker, highly organized with meticulous attention to detail
• Knowledge of classical music and/or jazz is desirable, but not required
