Jazz Audition Overview

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the New York Youth Symphony's Jazz program.

Audition Dates

Auditions for the Jazz program will be held September 18-20, 2016. 

Upon completing the online application and paying the application fee, you will receive a link to schedule your audition time online. All audition times must be scheduled through the online calendar. Please do not phone the administrative office to schedule your audition.

Before you Apply

Age Eligibility:  In order to participate in a NYYS Program the applicant's birthdate must fall between November 24, 2004 and May 25, 1994, inclusive. Please do not apply if you are outside of these dates as you will not be eligible for the program and we are not able to refund your application fee.

Program Guidelines: We encourage each applicant to review the Jazz Program Musician Guidelines to make sure that you can fulfill the commitment to the program before applying. Rehearsal and Concert Schedule: Rehearsals are held most Sundays from 6:00-8:30pm at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, located at 450 West 37th Street, New York, NY.  

Fees: A non-refundable application fee for the 2015-2016 season is $80. In addition to the application fee, there is a $50 Registration Fee upon acceptance into the program. Work study subsidies are available. Please contact the administrative office if you are intersted in work study opportunities.

What to Expect at Your Audition

Auditions are ten minutes in length. A warm up room is available ten minutes prior to your audition time.

Your audition will consist of the following:
  1. Excerpts (link below)
  2. Improvisation. Please prepare the following songs, which are included in the audition packets below:
    • Jerome Kern: "All The Things You Are"
    • Charlie Parker: "Billie's Bounce"
  3. Sight reading.
  • If you wish to be considered for an auxiliary instrument, please prepare an additional excerpt of your choice. Flute and clarinet are desirable as auxiliary instruments.
  • Drum applicants need to bring their own Cymbals, Universal Clutch, and sticks
