Orchestra Excerpts

Below you will find the Excerpts to download for your audition and additional instructions of what to prepare for your audition. Please prepare all auditions in the excerpt package.

Please note: If you are auditioning on an auxillary instrument, you need to prepare two excerpts for your primary instrument, two works of contrasting styles on your primary instrument, and the excerpts for the auxillary instrument.


Violin

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles, preferrably including the first movement of a Mozart concerto. Please prepare the top line of all divisi sections. Scales, bowing techniques, and sight-reading will be required. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 3 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range. Students may be asked to demonstrate various standard bowing (détaché, martelé, collé, jeté, spiccato) on the scale they choose.


Viola

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Please prepare the top line of all divisi sections. Scales, bowing techniques, and sight-reading will be required. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 3 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range. Students may be asked to demonstrate various standard bowing (détaché, martelé, collé, jeté, spiccato) on the scale they choose.


Cello

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Please prepare the top line of all divisi sections. Scales, bowing techniques, and sight-reading will be required. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 3 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range. Students may be asked to demonstrate various standard bowing (détaché, martelé, collé, jeté, spiccato) on the scale they choose.


Bass

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Please make sure to play the Bass part if the part shows both Cello and Bass lines. Scales, bowing techniques, and sight-reading will be required. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 3 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range. Students may be asked to demonstrate various standard bowing (détaché, martelé, collé, jeté, spiccato) on the scale they choose.


Flute

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales and sight-reading will be required, as well as double- and triple-tonguing. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 2 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range. Students may be asked to demonstrate double- and triple-tonguing on the scale they choose.

*Flutists auditioning on both Flute and Piccolo need only prepare 2 of the 4 flute excerpts of their choice in addition to 2 piccolo excerpts.  Though not required, this season it is strongly desired that all flutists are able to double on piccolo.


Piccolo

Applicants will be required to prepare the piccolo excerpt in addition to two excerpts and two works of contrasting styles on their primary instrument. Scales and sight-reading will be required, as well as double- and triple-tonguing.

Oboe

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales and sight-reading will be required, as well as double- and triple-tonguing. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 2 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range. Students may be asked to demonstrate double- and triple-tonguing on the scale they choose.

*Oboists auditioning on both Oboe and English Horn should pick 2 of the 3 oboe excerpts in addition to the 2 English horn excerpts


English Horn

Applicants will be required to prepare the excerpts for your primary instrument, the English Horn excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales and sight-reading will be required, as well as double- and triple-tonguing.


Clarinet

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales and sight-reading will be required, as well as double- and triple-tonguing. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 2 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range. Students may be asked to demonstrate double- and triple-tonguing on the scale they choose.

If you are also auditioning on an auxiliary instrument you only need to prepare 2 of the 3 Clarinet excerpts and the auxillary excerpts, in addition to two works of contrasting styles on the Clarinet. 


Bass Clarinet

Applicants will be required to prepare the Bass Clarinet excerpts in addition to two excerpts and two works of contrasting styles on their primary instrument. Scales and sight-reading will be required, as well as double- and triple-tonguing.


Bassoon 

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales and sight-reading will be required, as well as double- and triple-tonguing. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 2 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range. Students may be asked to demonstrate double- and triple-tonguing on the scale they choose.

*Bassoonists also auditioning on contrabassoon should pick 3 of the 4 bassoon excerpts in addition to the 2 contrabassoon excerpts.

Alto Saxophone

Applicants will be required to prepare the Alto Saxophone excerpts in addition to two excerpts and two works of contrasting styles on their primary instrument. Scales and sight-reading will be required..


Horn

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales and sight-reading will be required, as well as double- and triple-tonguing. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 2 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range. Students may be asked to demonstrate double- and triple-tonguing on the scale they choose.


Trumpet

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales and sight-reading will be required, as well as double- and triple-tonguing.  Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 2 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range. Students may be asked to demonstrate double- and triple-tonguing on the scale they choose. Please note that the first trumpet excerpts are in F, while the third trumpet excerpt is in C.


Trombone

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales, tonguing, and sight-reading will be required. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 2 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range.


Bass Trombone

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales, tonguing, and sight-reading will be required. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 2 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range.


Tuba

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales, tonguing, and sight-reading will be required. Applicants will be expected to play one major scale in concert Ab, B, or Db (students' choice), 2 octaves, and to play a chromatic scale throughout their range.


Harp

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales and sight-reading will be required.


Piano

Applicants will be required to prepare all of the following excerpts in addition to two works of contrasting styles. Scales and sight-reading will be required.

Percussion & Timpani

  • Please note that applicants only need to prepare the Timpani excerpts if they want to audition to be the Timpanist for the season. Excerpts are included in the main percussion excerpt file.
