"Accomplished"
National Leadership in Music Education

Since 1963, the New York Youth Symphony has supported young musicians in their pursuit of the highest quality experience in music education and performance. The organization boasts an impressive track record which has earned wide recognition among instrumental, conducting, and composition teachers throughout the country.

Renowned artists have had their careers assisted by their early experience with the New York Youth Symphony. Among alumni are conductors Leonard Slatkin, Myung-Whun Chung, David Alan Miller, Samuel Wong, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and Mischa Santora; violinists Marin Alsop, Pamela Frank, Cho-Liang Lin, Shlomo Mintz, and Peter Oundjian; trumpeter Gerard Schwarz; flutist Ransom Wilson; and members of the Juilliard, Emerson, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Mendelssohn String Quartets, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, the Israel Philharmonic, the London Symphony, and other major ensembles throughout the world.

As a focal point where musical careers are determined, the New York Youth Symphony has provided thousands of young people with unique musical and personal experiences to enrich their chosen directions. Throughout the organization's many programs, emphasis is placed on each student's development as both musician and member of the community.

"Inspired"
National Leadership in
Performance

The orchestra's 44 consecutive seasons in Carnegie Hall, the Chamber Music Program's unparalleled 25 years of ensemble training, and the initiation of programs in composition and jazz have earned the praise of professional critics, music administrators, and audiences alike. Critical reviews regularly lavish praise on the orchestra, while large audiences fill Carnegie Hall for the orchestra's seasonal concerts, Weill Recital Hall for the chamber music performances, Jazz at Lincoln Center's Allen Room for Jazz Band Classic, and Symphony Space for performances of Symphony Singers and the Making Score composition program.

"Remarkable"
National Leadership in
Programming

The New York Youth Symphony offers a variety of projects aimed at nurturing the young artist. In addition to maintaining a preeminent position among the nation's most advanced orchestras for young people, the organization has widened its reach with innovative and dynamic new programs. The New York Youth Symphony was among the first to initiate a program in chamber music and is the unquestioned leader in commissioning young American composers through its First Music program. A ground-breaking composition program called Making Score for under-23 composers was added in 2000, and the orchestra has been at the forefront of developing young conductors for the next generation of podium leadership. Jazz Band Classic, a 17-piece ensemble, reaches out to musicians interested in the big band music of the 1930's and 1940's while incorporating today's styles. Symphony Singers, a SATB chamber choir, performs music spanning eight centuries, classic and popular, a cappella and accompanied. The full range of offerings provides young people with numerous opportunities to explore their talents and fills a critical void in musical education.
