Auditions for the 2018/19 season are now closed. We invite you to audition for the 2019/20 season - please check back in June 2019 for further audition information.

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the New York Youth Symphony's Orchestra.

With its sophisticated programming, performances in one of the world's greatest concert halls, superb musical leadership, new works commissioned of the nation's best young composers, outstanding soloists, and professional-level attitude, the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra sets itself apart as one of the finest ensembles in the nation. Michael Repper was appointed music director at the beginning of the 2017/18 season.

Age Eligibility

New York Youth Symphony serves students between the ages of 12 and 22. In order to participate in a NYYS Program, the applicant's birthdate must be no earlier than May 17, 1996 and no later than November 17, 2006, inclusive. Please do not apply if your birthdate falls outside of these dates as you will not be eligible for the program and we are not able to refund your application fee.

Rehearsal and Concert Schedule

Rehearsals are held on Sundays from 2-6pm at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, located at 450 West 37th Street, New York, NY. The first rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, September 16, 2018. Concert dates for the season are November 18th, December 2nd, February 24th, March 10th, and May 12th at 2:00 pm.

Please note: Rehearsals prior to a concert are mandatory for all students to attend. If you do not attend a mandatory rehearsal you will not be allowed to perform at the concerts for that concert cycle.

Kick-Off Weekend

Kick-Off Weekend will take place September 21-23, 2018 at Camp DeWolfe in Wading River, NY. Rehearsals, sectionals, workshops and social events are planned as a way to start the orchestra season. This is a required event for all orchestra students and all students should plan on leaving Friday afternoon and returning Sunday early evening.

Fees

There is a non-refundable application fee of $95. In addition to the application fee, there is a $575 Registration Fee upon acceptance into the program. What to Expect at Your Audition

Auditions are ten minutes in length. A warm up room is available ten minutes prior to your audition time. Due to space limitations we ask that you do not arrive for your audition more than 15 minutes in advance.

You may be asked to perform sight-reading excerpts, both melodic and rhythmic. You may also be asked to demonstrate various different basic techniques germane to your instrument, which may include knowledge of major and minor scales and/or bowing/tonguing techniques.

Please bring solo repertoire with you, although note that due to time constraints, you may not be asked to perform your solo repertoire in your audition. In preparation for this audition, please place the highest priority on the excerpts found below.
