Spain Tour Scholarship Fundraiser
We are excited to announce that the New York Youth Symphony (NYYS) will make its European debut next summer! Students from the NYYS Orchestra and Chamber Music programs will travel to Spain for 10 days of performances and cultural exchanges, inspiring audiences and making connections through the universal language of music. This represents an extraordinary opportunity for our young musicians, and follows successful tours by the NYYS orchestra to Argentina (2015) and the NYYS jazz band to Brazil (2016).
The NYYS is a year-round, tuition-free program, and we are proud of the diversity represented by our student body. The chance to travel to Spain will truly be a life-changing experience for all of our students, but the $4,000 cost is not covered by the NYYS, and for many of our families it is well beyond their means. The NYYS must raise $80,000 to support its tremendous students who would otherwise not be able to participate. We hope you will help us accomplish that goal! Every amount gets us closer to the goal!
Over ten days in late June-July, 2019, the NYYS Orchestra and Chamber Music students will perform in venues rich in history and tradition in Madrid, Seville, Toledo, Ronda and Malaga. They will present challenging works that they will have prepared and performed during the 2018/19 season in New York, including Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” The remarkable young Chinese pianist Fei Fei, a finalist in the 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will join the tour performing the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Orchestra. An NYYS commissioned work by Theo Chandler will complete the program. The chamber music programs will be announced in early November 2018.
In addition to performances, the NYYS will participate in a series of invaluable cultural exchanges with local students in Madrid, Valladolid, and Malaga – fantastic opportunities for our students to expand their own world views while serving as musical ambassadors in a new culture.
NEW YORK YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The New York Youth Symphony (NYYS) is nationally recognized for its innovative educational programs for talented young musicians and for providing unparalleled opportunities to study with exceptional faculty and perform at world-class venues. The NYYS is proud to welcome qualified students from all backgrounds to participate regardless of their ability to pay, made possible by the availability of over $1 million in scholarships. The organization offers groundbreaking and rigorous programs for students ages 12 to 22 in orchestra, chamber music, jazz, composition, musical theater composition, and conducting. NYYS ensembles will present more than 20 free and ticketed performances this season, including concerts at Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center, reaching an audience of approximately 8,500 people.
Any amount you can donate will be greatly appreciated, and all donors will receive a personalized thank-you on Facebook from an NYYS student. In addition, we offer the extra rewards for additional support!
