Sam Torres

Composer, Seasons 49-51 | Jazz

I’m currently a student at Manhattan School of Music, and I work as a stagehand and also do a lot of performing, composing, and freelance audio production. I was in the New York Youth Symphony Jazz Band during the 49th, 50th, and 51st seasons from 2011 through 2014. I joined the group because I wasn’t getting the kind of musical experience I needed from my high school. The big band was by far the best group I’d ever played with, and it was a really formative experience for me. I also was able to meet and work with many fantastic guest clinicians and soloists each year. The NYYS big band definitely prepared me for conservatory level playing and continued to provide experience during the first two years of my college career. It was honor to perform at venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall with the group. I am now in my second year in the Composition Program under Kyle Blaha.

Update, December 2016: Sam is now studying computer music composition at the Peabody Institute
