I’ve played the piano since I was 3 and joined the NYYS chamber music program when I was 13. Walking into orientation, I expected to meet the other two members of my piano trio and coach. Instead, I found myself in a sea of chamber musicians rhythmically thundering through Steve Reich’s Clapping Music. These brass, woodwind, and string players all had their own chamber groups, but at that moment we were communicating, listening, and playing as one. I have had so many opportunities to learn from inspiring teachers and perform in amazing places; but I am even more grateful for the fellow musicians I have been able to meet and play with every year since my first orientation.
